An eggshell dryer is specialized equipment designed to remove moisture from eggshells for further processing. The dryer must ensure uniform and economical drying, preventing bacterial growth and extending the eggshell's shelf life.

After the egg white and yolk are extracted, what remains is the eggshell — a valuable byproduct rich in calcium and other minerals. It is used as fertilizer, a feed additive for poultry and livestock, a dietary supplement for humans, and in pharmaceuticals.

However, after the egg mass is separated, the eggshell still contains residual moisture, which begins to spoil quickly. Therefore, the shells are dried immediately after centrifugation.

Types of Dryers for Eggshell Processing

Several types of dryers are used industrially for eggshell processing, each with its own characteristics. The choice depends on required drying speed, energy efficiency, and final product quality.

1. Drum Dryers

  • Standard drum dryers — provide high-temperature drying of large volumes in a rotating drum. Effective but prone to product clumping and wall adhesion. The heavy mechanism with wear-prone parts is more demanding to maintain.
  • Drum dryers with an internal screw — equipped with a screw mechanism that moves and distributes the product evenly. Designed for smaller, more typical eggshell volumes. Heating is indirect via a heat-transfer fluid (e.g. hot oil) circulating in double-walled drums. Indirect heating has thermal losses, and the low airflow through the screw limits efficient moisture removal. Product may adhere to the walls, and screw replacement is a costly procedure.

2. Vibratory (Fluid-Bed) Dryers

The most popular type for eggshell processing. They operate on the "fluidized bed" principle: the shells are kept suspended in a stream of hot air and exposed to intensive yet brief high-temperature treatment. Vibration ensures uniform product distribution, accelerating drying and preventing scorching. This type is well suited for rapid moisture removal with minimal structural damage to the shell.

3. Conveyor Dryers

The product is placed on a moving belt and passes through drying zones with adjustable temperature settings. This method allows precise control over the dehydration process, ensuring uniform drying. Conveyor dryers are particularly suited to large-scale operations with continuous material flow. For very high production capacities, a conveyor dryer can be more economical than installing multiple vibratory units.

The choice of dryer type depends on the volume of raw material, final moisture requirements, energy efficiency, and specific process conditions. In general, at typical processing plants the vibratory dryer is by far the most common solution. Drum dryers with an internal screw are seen less frequently.

Fluidized-bed technology provides even heat distribution throughout the entire product mass. Unlike drum dryers, where localised overheating can occur, vibratory dryers prevent scorching, preserving the shell's structure and nutritional content.

Vibratory drying is less aggressive than drum or screw drying systems. This is particularly important when processing crushed eggshells, as it minimises mechanical breakdown and the formation of fine dust particles.

A built-in hot-air recirculation system further reduces fuel costs, making the process more economical compared to technologies without recirculation.

The vibratory dryer has no large moving parts. The product is kept in a semi-suspended state (the so-called fluidized bed), so friction against the dryer internals is minimal.

Because the dryer has no large rotating mechanisms, maintenance is genuinely simple — mainly inspection and monitoring of key components.

The absence of wear-prone parts ensures long operational life without costly repairs (as is often required with drum dryers).

8. Easy Cleaning

The Scolari vibratory dryer is designed so that sticky eggshell residues do not impede the drying process. With a properly functioning centrifuge, the dryer typically needs washing only once every 1–3 months. The cleaning procedure is straightforward: water drains easily through inclined lower surfaces and dedicated drain hatches.
